Nigerian universities have been called upon to strengthen their capacity for attracting international research grants and improving strategic resource mobilisation in order to remain globally competitive and financially sustainable.
This appeal was made during a collaborative research workshop organised by the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) in Abuja. The workshop, themed “Unlocking Global Funding: Resource Mobilisation and International Grantsmanship for Nigerian Universities,” focused on equipping institutions with the skills needed to secure and manage global research funding.
Speaking at the event, the Secretary-General of CVCNU, Prof. Andrew Haruna, noted that the global academic landscape has evolved significantly, with leading universities increasingly depending on competitive grants to drive innovation and research growth. He explained that although Nigerian universities are eligible for numerous international funding opportunities, many face challenges such as weak proposal development capacity, poor alignment with donor priorities, and inadequate institutional frameworks.
Haruna stressed that overdependence on government funding has limited universities’ ability to diversify their revenue sources. According to him, institutions must begin to explore alternative funding options, including international grants, industry partnerships, and collaborative research networks.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of Optimal Delivery Solutions Projects and Corporate Services Limited, Mr. Ken Oguzie, highlighted three key strategic shifts necessary for success. He said universities must move from individual-based efforts to institution-driven strategies, from local focus to global relevance, and from competition to collaboration.
Oguzie further explained that international donors now prioritise research that addresses pressing global challenges such as climate change, food security, artificial intelligence, public health, and inclusive development. He emphasised that grant writing should be seen as a strategic institutional capability rather than just a technical skill.
Other facilitators, including Dr. Akanimo Odon and Mrs. Joy Ezirim, underscored the importance of international partnerships, institutional branding, and a strong online presence in enhancing visibility and credibility.
Participants were exposed to modern tools, funding trends, and compliance standards, while also engaging in networking and peer learning sessions aimed at strengthening collaboration and improving access to global research opportunities.
