Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Peace, Stability in Sudan, Seeks Stronger Bilateral Cooperation

Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peace and stability in Sudan, while also strengthening diplomatic and bilateral relations between both countries.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Dunoma Ahmed, made this known in Abuja during a meeting with the Ambassador of Sudan to Nigeria, Amb. Mohamed Abdelaal. The engagement was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
Ahmed stressed that Nigeria remains firmly committed to promoting peaceful resolution of the crisis in Sudan through dialogue, negotiation, and inclusive political processes. He noted that sustained peace in Sudan is critical not only for the country itself but also for wider regional stability across Africa, particularly the Sahel region, which has continued to face multiple security challenges.

According to him, Nigeria has consistently played an active role within the African Union and the broader international community in advocating peaceful settlement of conflicts. He emphasized that lasting peace can only be achieved through constructive engagement among all stakeholders involved in the Sudanese crisis.
The Permanent Secretary also highlighted the longstanding historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and Sudan, noting that both countries share centuries of interaction, migration, and cooperation. He reaffirmed that these shared ties provide a strong foundation for deeper diplomatic and economic collaboration.
Both officials discussed practical steps to strengthen bilateral relations, including the proposed convening of the Nigeria–Sudan Political Consultations Committee. The platform, they noted, would help address issues of mutual interest and enhance cooperation between the two nations.
They also considered plans for a high-level visit by Sudanese leadership to Nigeria, as well as the need to protect Nigerian assets in Sudan and provide support for Nigerians affected by the ongoing conflict.
On his part, Ambassador Abdelaal acknowledged the deep-rooted relationship between both countries and highlighted the integration of Nigerians within Sudanese society. He also provided updates on ongoing recovery efforts in parts of Sudan affected by conflict, noting gradual progress in restoring stability in some areas.
However, he expressed concern over continued external interference in Sudan’s internal affairs, warning that it could prolong the conflict and worsen regional insecurity.
