The Minister of Solid Minerals Development has commended the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals for their efforts in tackling illegal mining and restoring order to Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
Speaking during an official engagement with officers of the Mining Marshals, the minister praised the unit’s leadership for its commitment to enforcing mining regulations and protecting the nation’s mineral resources from illegal exploitation. He noted that the activities of illegal miners have for years deprived the country of significant revenue, damaged the environment and threatened legitimate mining operations.
According to the minister, the establishment of the specialised Mining Marshals has strengthened the government’s campaign against illegal mining, leading to improved compliance with mining laws and increased confidence among licensed operators. He said several illegal mining sites have been shut down while suspects involved in unlawful activities have been arrested and handed over for prosecution.

The minister stressed that the Federal Government remains committed to transforming the mining sector into a major contributor to Nigeria’s economy through improved regulation, investment and security. He urged the Mining Marshals to sustain their professionalism and continue working closely with other security agencies and host communities.
He also called on licensed mining companies to comply with environmental and operational standards, adding that responsible mining practices are essential for sustainable development and the protection of local communities.
Officials of the NSCDC reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding mining assets and preventing illegal activities across the country. They assured the minister that operations against illegal miners would continue in line with the law.
Industry stakeholders welcomed the government’s renewed focus on the mining sector, noting that stronger enforcement would encourage investment, create employment and increase government revenue. They also called for continued collaboration between government agencies, investors and local communities to ensure lasting reforms.
The minister concluded by expressing confidence that ongoing reforms and enhanced security measures would position Nigeria’s mining industry as a key driver of economic diversification while promoting transparency, environmental sustainability and national development.
