António Guterres has urged African, Caribbean and Pacific countries to rebuild confidence in multilateralism, describing it as essential for addressing global challenges and driving inclusive progress.
Speaking at the summit of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States held in Equatorial Guinea, the UN Secretary-General emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation among member states. He noted that stronger multilateral partnerships would enable countries to better tackle pressing global issues and create opportunities for sustainable growth.
Guterres called on member nations to scale up investments in sustainable development and climate resilience. According to him, such efforts are critical in helping vulnerable countries withstand the growing impacts of climate change while improving economic stability. He also stressed the need for reforms in the global financial system to make it more equitable and responsive to the needs of developing nations.

Highlighting key global concerns, Guterres pointed to rising conflicts, widening inequality, and the accelerating climate crisis as major threats to global stability. He noted that African, Caribbean and Pacific countries are among the most affected despite contributing the least to global emissions. This, he said, underscores the urgent need for climate justice and stronger international support.
The UN chief called on major industrialised nations to take the lead in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to honour commitments aimed at limiting global temperature rise. He also advocated increased financial and technical support for developing countries to adapt to climate impacts and transition to sustainable energy systems.
Commending OACPS member states, Guterres acknowledged their efforts in promoting innovation, regional solidarity, and South-South cooperation. He encouraged them to continue leveraging partnerships to advance development goals and improve the wellbeing of their populations.
He concluded by reaffirming the United Nations’ commitment to supporting the bloc, urging all stakeholders to work together in building a fairer, more resilient, and inclusive global system.
