UNICEF-Backed Vaccination Campaign Launches for 1.5 Million Children in Sokoto State

A vaccination campaign has been launched in Sokoto State under the support of UNICEF, with 1.5 million children targeted for immunisation.

As part of the broader effort to improve child health, vitamin A supplements have also been administered — with 3.1 million children reportedly reached, and an additional 285,000 provided with nutritional support.

The initiative has been described as a collaborative effort involving government authorities, health workers, and development partners, aimed at reducing preventable illnesses among young children.

Vaccination slots have been opened across various local government areas to ensure wide coverage, and community mobilization has been intensified so that parents bring eligible children forward. Health officials have been mobilized to track progress, document immunizations, and follow up on children who miss initial appointments.

The support for nutrition and immunization has been welcomed by many families, who have expressed relief that lifesaving services are being provided for their children. The campaign has been hailed as a vital step toward strengthening public health infrastructure and disease prevention efforts in the region.

As the exercise continues, monitoring mechanisms have been put in place to ensure transparency, efficient distribution of vaccines and supplements, and follow-up for any child requiring additional doses. Health stakeholders have pledged that necessary resources will be maintained until all targeted children are vaccinated and nutritional support delivered.

This programme is viewed as a major achievement — not only because of the large number of children being reached, but also because it reflects renewed commitment to public health and child welfare at the state and international partner levels.
