Sokoto Police Smash “Sai Malam” Cult, Arrest Three for WhatsApp-Based Recruitment Drive

The police in Sokoto State broke up a dangerous new cult called “Sai Malam,” arresting three suspected members after acting on strong intelligence. The arrests, which the police described as a major breakthrough, targeted the group’s alleged mastermind, Usman Shu’aibu, along with two associates.

During interrogation, the suspects admitted they joined the group through a private WhatsApp channel known as “Red Chamber.” They said the platform served as a portal to lure unsuspecting youths into the cult, using promises of power, wealth, or belonging. Once recruited, many reportedly underwent initiation rites that involved ritual practices, alleged pursuit of supernatural powers, organized violence, and other reprehensible acts.

Authorities said the arrests disrupted what they believe was a functioning “cell” of the cult operating across several communities. The police expressed grave concern that the group aimed to expand its reach by preying on vulnerable youths via social media and messaging apps. They described “Sai Malam” as a serious threat to public safety and social order.

In a public advisory, the Sokoto police urged parents and guardians to monitor their children’s online activities closely. They emphasized the importance of open communication at home, warning parents to watch out for sudden changes in behavior, secrecy around phones, or withdrawal — all potential red flags of cult recruitment. The police also called on citizens to report any suspicious grupos, activities or recruitment efforts.

The police command pledged to intensify investigations until they dismantle the entire network behind the cult. They assured residents that they remain committed to safeguarding lives and property, and vowed to prosecute any individual or group found involved in cultism or related crimes.

As the crackdown continues, communities in Sokoto hope that this operation signals a decisive effort to stamp out modern, digitally rooted cult recruitment and preserve safety for all.
