Rivers State Remains Calm Despite State of Emergency Declaration

Despite the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, life in the state remains calm and peaceful. Our correspondent, Doris Tams Morrison, took a tour around major roads in Port Harcourt to assess the situation.

At the Rivers State Secretariat, workers were seen heading to their respective ministries. Though many expressed dissatisfaction with the current political situation, they remained committed to their duties.

A visit to Moscow Road, which houses key institutions such as the State House of Assembly, NNPC Zonal Office, Police Headquarters, National Population Commission, and various courts, revealed a peaceful atmosphere. Though police vehicles were stationed in the area with some blockades, there was no sign of unrest or disorder.

Similarly, on Bank Road, home to the Central Bank, no police presence was observed, and workers continued their daily routines as usual.

At the Government House, the once-visible presence of military vehicles and officers had disappeared. However, a major issue arose as staff from the office of the Deputy Governor were reportedly locked out and denied entry into their offices.

Youths Demand Action from Lawmakers

Several youth organizations in the state have voiced their concerns, calling on their representatives in the Senate and the House of Representatives to challenge the declaration of the state of emergency. Among those speaking out were Barinu Nebari and Comrade Wisdom Kabara, the Director of the Centre for Social Justice and Environmental Rights Protection.

Governor Fubara Addresses Rivers People

Amid the ongoing political tension, suspended Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, addressed the people of Rivers State. He reaffirmed his dedication to maintaining security, governance, and the rule of law while striving to restore peace following the intervention of the President.

Governor Fubara acknowledged compliance with the Supreme Court ruling and the reinstatement of former commissioners. However, he accused the State Assembly of deliberately obstructing the state’s progress.

Despite the political turmoil, the governor urged citizens to remain peaceful and reassured them that government functions, including salary payments and ongoing projects, would not be disrupted. He pledged to uphold democracy and stability in the state.

While Rivers State remains politically tense, the situation on the ground appears peaceful. The actions of the State Assembly and the response of federal lawmakers will play a crucial role in determining the next phase of this unfolding political drama. For now, the people of Rivers State continue their daily lives, hoping for a resolution that upholds democracy and the rule of law.
