River Niger: 42 Missing, 14 Dead in Kogi Boat Disaster

A tragic boat accident on the River Niger has left at least 14 people dead and 42 others missing, after a vessel carrying about 80 passengers capsized in Kogi State on Tuesday evening.

The ill-fated boat was traveling from Onugwa community in Ibaji Local Government Area to Olushi village when it overturned mid-river. So far, 24 people have been rescued as emergency teams continue an intense search and rescue operation.

The disaster has drawn swift response from emergency services, including state and federal rescue teams, marine authorities, the Red Cross, and local divers, who are working round the clock to recover the missing.

Authorities believe overloading may have contributed to the accident. The state government has urged residents in riverine communities to strictly adhere to safety guidelines, including avoiding overcrowded boats and using life jackets.

Officials have promised to support the victims’ families and enforce stricter safety measures to prevent further tragedies on the state’s waterways.

Search efforts remain ongoing as families pray for the safe return of their loved ones.
