Northern Leaders Support State Police, Call for Six-Month Mining Suspension

A joint meeting involving governors and traditional rulers from Northern Nigeria was held in Kaduna, where key decisions were reached to address persistent insecurity across the region. During the meeting, a resolution was adopted calling for a six-month suspension of all mining activities. It was agreed that the temporary halt would allow for a comprehensive audit and revalidation of mining licences, as illegal mining was identified as a major contributor to insecurity, especially in areas affected by banditry and violent crime.

Support was also expressed for the establishment of state police, with the leaders stating that decentralised policing would enhance security response and improve the capacity to tackle terrorism, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality affecting the region. It was acknowledged that security agencies currently operate under serious strain, and local policing structures were seen as essential to complement existing systems.

As part of a broader security framework, the creation of a Regional Security Trust Fund was proposed. Under the arrangement, each state and its local governments would contribute monthly funding to support coordinated operations, intelligence gathering, equipment, and personnel deployment. The initiative was expected to create a unified and well-resourced approach to combating insecurity.

Condolences were extended to communities recently affected by killings, abductions, and attacks. A commitment was made by leaders to work collaboratively and support ongoing national security efforts while pursuing additional regional strategies. The decisions reached were described as necessary steps toward restoring peace, protecting lives, and ensuring long-term stability in Northern Nigeria.
