The Federal Government has appealed to residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to remain calm following the recent earth tremors recorded in parts of Abuja, assuring the public that there is no immediate threat to lives or property.
Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, said the tremors, which were felt in communities such as Mpape and Katampe, are low-intensity seismic activities that do not pose any significant danger. According to him, the government, through the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), has been closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of residents.
Alake explained that the tremors are the result of accumulated geological stress along existing fault lines beneath the earth’s surface. He noted that experts have detected several ground movements in recent days, but their intensity has remained weak to light, making them unlikely to cause serious damage.

The minister emphasized that Nigeria is not considered a major earthquake-prone country and urged residents to avoid spreading panic or unverified information on social media. He reassured the public that the government has the necessary monitoring systems in place and will continue to provide timely updates if there are any significant developments.
He added that the NGSA’s seismic monitoring stations are operating around the clock, allowing experts to detect and assess any unusual ground movement in real time. This, he said, enables authorities to respond quickly should the need arise.
While urging calm, Alake advised residents to remain alert and follow basic safety guidelines whenever earth tremors occur. These include moving away from unstable structures, avoiding elevators during shaking, and staying in open spaces where possible until the tremor subsides.
The government also encouraged members of the public to rely only on official information from relevant agencies and avoid circulating false reports capable of creating unnecessary fear among residents.
Experts describe earth tremors as minor movements of the earth’s crust caused by the gradual release of underground pressure. Although similar to earthquakes, they are generally much weaker and rarely result in widespread destruction.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring Abuja residents that the situation is under control. Authorities said continuous monitoring and scientific assessment will remain in place to ensure early detection of any changes, while maintaining that there is currently no cause for alarm.
