NiMet Forecasts Rainfall in 22 States, Warns of Possible Flash Flooding

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has forecast rainfall across 22 states and warned residents in some areas about the possibility of flash flooding.
The weather agency issued the warning as part of its latest forecast, urging residents and relevant authorities to take precautions in areas expected to experience significant rainfall.
NiMet predicted cloudy conditions in parts of the southern region during the morning, with chances of light rainfall over parts of Ondo State as well as areas in the South-South and South-East.
The agency further forecast moderate to heavy rainfall during the afternoon and evening in parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.
Other parts of southern Nigeria were expected to experience light to moderate rainfall.
The warning is particularly important because intense rainfall within a short period can overwhelm drainage systems and increase the risk of flash flooding, especially in urban areas with blocked drainage channels or poor flood management infrastructure.
Residents living close to waterways, low-lying areas and flood-prone communities were therefore advised to remain alert and follow weather updates from official authorities.
Flash floods can develop quickly and may threaten lives, homes, roads, businesses and other infrastructure.
NiMet’s forecast also has implications for transportation and aviation. The agency advised airline operators to obtain updated weather information and advisories to support effective planning and safe flight operations.
Authorities in affected states are expected to monitor rainfall patterns and take preventive measures where necessary.
Residents are encouraged to avoid driving or walking through rapidly moving floodwater because water levels can rise unexpectedly.

The latest forecast also reinforces the importance of maintaining drainage channels and removing materials that could obstruct the flow of rainwater.
Nigeria has experienced several cases of flooding during the rainy season, with heavy rainfall sometimes combining with inadequate drainage and rising water levels to cause serious damage.
Weather agencies have therefore continued to encourage citizens to take early warnings seriously and prepare for potentially severe weather.
NiMet’s latest forecast serves as an early warning for communities to remain cautious as rainfall increases in different parts of the country.
Residents should continue to monitor official weather updates, particularly during periods of heavy rain, while emergency authorities should remain prepared to respond to flooding incidents.
The agency’s warning is aimed at reducing the risks associated with severe rainfall and ensuring that individuals, businesses and government institutions can take appropriate measures before dangerous conditions develop.
