Nigeria and Canada have signed an expanded Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) aimed at strengthening aviation cooperation, improving air connectivity and paving the way for increased direct flight operations between both countries.
The agreement marks a significant milestone in the relationship between the two nations, providing a broader framework for airlines from Nigeria and Canada to operate passenger and cargo services with greater flexibility. Officials said the revised pact is expected to enhance trade, tourism, investment and cultural exchanges while making travel easier for citizens and businesses.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Nigerian aviation authorities described the agreement as an important step towards modernising the country’s aviation sector and expanding its global air transport network. They noted that the revised arrangement aligns with the Federal Government’s efforts to position Nigeria as a leading aviation hub in West Africa.
Under the expanded agreement, designated airlines from both countries are expected to enjoy improved access to routes and commercial opportunities, subject to regulatory approvals. The pact also provides a framework for deeper cooperation in areas such as aviation safety, security, technical collaboration and regulatory oversight.
Government officials explained that the agreement would create opportunities for increased passenger traffic and cargo movement, benefiting exporters, importers and the growing Nigerian diaspora in Canada. Faster and more convenient flight connections are also expected to reduce travel time and improve business relations between the two countries.
Industry stakeholders welcomed the development, saying enhanced air connectivity could stimulate economic growth by encouraging tourism, facilitating international trade and attracting foreign investment. They added that expanded aviation partnerships often create employment opportunities across sectors, including airlines, airports, logistics, hospitality and related services.
The agreement is also expected to support Nigeria’s broader economic diversification agenda by improving access to international markets for locally produced goods. Exporters of agricultural products and other commodities may benefit from more efficient cargo services once the new arrangements become fully operational.
Although the signing of the agreement establishes the legal framework for expanded operations, aviation experts noted that the commencement of additional direct flights will depend on commercial decisions by airlines, aircraft availability and regulatory clearances from both countries.
