Niger State Government Abolishes Taxation on Hawkers and Petty Traders

The Niger State Government has officially banned the taxation of hawkers and petty traders across the state to alleviate financial burdens on small-scale entrepreneurs.

The decision, announced from the Government House in Minna, aims to curb exploitation and ensure that low-income earners operate without undue financial pressure. The state government emphasized that Local Government Council Chairmen and Councilors must enforce the directive and halt any form of taxation on small traders immediately.

According to the government, a centralized tax system is already in place, which exempts hawkers and petty traders from any levies. Officials warned that anyone found imposing unauthorized taxes on these groups would face strict penalties for extortion.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts to support small businesses, encourage economic growth at the grassroots level, and create a more inclusive commercial environment in the state.
