Lagos Assembly Speaker Meranda Resigns Amid Leadership Crisis

In a dramatic turn of events, Mojisola Meranda has stepped down as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, amid a deepening leadership crisis that has divided lawmakers and party leaders in the state.

Meranda, who had a brief yet impactful tenure, announced her resignation with a heartfelt statement:

“I take a bow as your Speaker.”

She insisted that her decision was in the best interest of the Assembly, emphasizing that she is not a quitter but felt it was the right thing to do for the institution.

Her resignation does not resolve the ongoing power tussle, particularly regarding the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, which has split the Assembly and the ruling party in Lagos. With tensions running high, the political landscape in the state remains uncertain.

Before stepping down, Meranda was widely applauded by her colleagues for her leadership skills and commitment to democracy.

  • Desmond Olusola Elliot, a lawmaker and Nollywood actor, praised her leadership, saying she “led the House well.”
  • Temitope Adewale Ifako-Ijaiye I called her a “heroine of democracy,” describing her as a victim of circumstance in the unfolding crisis.

With Meranda out, the battle for control of the Lagos State Assembly is far from over. Will the political storm settle, or is this just the beginning of a bigger power struggle?

One thing is clear—Lagos politics just got even more intense.
