La start of the 2026/27 La Liga season has been thrown into uncertainty after a suspected fungal infection seriously damaged the playing surface at Celta Vigo’s Balaídos Stadium.
Celta Vigo are scheduled to host Osasuna in their opening league fixture on Sunday, but the condition of the pitch has raised doubts over whether the match can go ahead as planned. Reports from Spain describe the surface as being in extremely poor condition and potentially unfit for a top-flight fixture.

The Spanish club has already contacted La Liga and Osasuna to express concern about the state of the pitch. Celta reportedly requested that the fixture be postponed because of the damage caused by the fungal infection.
La Liga has responded by sending technical officials to Vigo to inspect the playing surface. Their assessment will determine whether the stadium is considered suitable for the match or whether the fixture will have to be moved to another date.
The inspection is expected to take place on Wednesday morning, with a decision anticipated later in the day.
The situation has created a difficult problem for Celta, particularly because the club has several fixtures and teams that depend on the Balaídos pitch. Celta’s first team is scheduled to play there, while Celta Fortuna also needs a suitable venue for its home matches.
The timing of the problem is particularly unfortunate because it comes just days before the beginning of the new La Liga campaign. Celta are hoping to start the season strongly after finishing sixth in the previous campaign and securing European football.
The condition of the pitch could also affect new signing Altay Bayındır, who recently joined Celta Vigo on loan from Manchester United. If the opening fixture is postponed, the goalkeeper may have to wait longer for his competitive debut for the Spanish club.
