Defence Minister Orders Shoot-on-Sight, Unveils New Anti-Terror Strategy in North-East

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has ordered troops on the frontline to adopt a shoot-on-sight approach against terrorists as part of intensified efforts to end insurgency in the North-East.
The directive was issued on Tuesday during a visit to troops in Maiduguri, alongside Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle. The visit followed renewed attacks by insurgent groups, including Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province, in parts of the region.
Addressing the troops, Musa emphasized the urgency of decisive action, stating that soldiers no longer need to wait for orders before engaging identified terrorists. He urged them to remain disciplined and focused, stressing that their primary responsibility is to locate and neutralize threats.
The Defence Minister acknowledged the sacrifices made by military personnel, noting that many have lost their lives or sustained injuries in the line of duty. He assured them that their efforts are recognized by the government and citizens, and called for sustained commitment to defeating terrorism and banditry

As part of renewed military strategies, Musa disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has approved the procurement of advanced military equipment, including aircraft and drones, to enhance operational efficiency. He added that international collaboration and improved intelligence would further strengthen Nigeria’s counterinsurgency operations.
Musa also revealed plans to improve troop welfare, announcing that recently approved salary increments for military personnel would be implemented within three months. He added that three months’ salary arrears would be paid promptly.
The minister expressed confidence in the Armed Forces, stating that they have recorded more successes than setbacks in ongoing operations. He urged Nigerians to support the military and highlight their achievements rather than focusing solely on challenges.
During the visit, the ministers met with Usman Kadafur, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to restoring peace in the region. Musa also inaugurated new housing units for military officers at Maimalari Barracks before returning to Abuja.
