AGILE Channels Billions into Classrooms, Water and Sanitation in Sokoto

The Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project has disclosed that it spent more than ₦8.4 billion on education-related interventions in Sokoto State during the 2025 implementation year.

At a recent media roundtable in Sokoto, the State Project Coordinator, Dr. Mansur Isah Buhari, revealed that the substantial investment was directed toward improving school infrastructure and expanding access to learning for adolescent girls across the state.

Dr. Buhari said the funds helped renovate 749 classrooms and install 214 solar-powered boreholes in public schools, addressing persistent water and hygiene challenges. He added that 1,652 toilet units were constructed in all 23 local government areas to enhance school environments, particularly for girls.

Highlighting community and environmental components of the project, Dr. Buhari noted that AGILE planted 4,480 trees in 224 schools, while 11,221 desks were delivered to improve learning conditions.

The initiative also recorded strong progress in school participation, enrolling 16,528 girls—nearly reaching its 17,000 target—and trained 2,240 members of School-Based Management Committees on school governance and student welfare.

In addition, AGILE distributed 97,446 teaching and learning materials to 240 secondary schools and reached 41,821 beneficiaries through its Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programme designed to support vulnerable families and keep girls in school.

Dr. Buhari also highlighted a disparity in the state’s educational infrastructure, noting that Sokoto has more than 2,000 primary schools but fewer than 600 secondary schools—a gap AGILE plans to address by establishing 58 smart secondary schools in the coming period.

The project’s Monitoring and Evaluation Officer confirmed that 94 of 161 planned activities for 2025 have been implemented—about 53% completion—as efforts continue to deliver on education targets.

AGILE’s investments reflect an intensified focus on creating safer, more inclusive and better-equipped learning environments for girls, signalling an important step in tackling educational inequalities and improving outcomes across Sokoto State.
