Sultan Confers Traditional Title on Veteran Broadcaster Dr. Igho


SOKOTO, Nigeria – In a rare and prestigious gesture, the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has conferred the traditional title of “Kakakin Daular Usmaniya” on renowned broadcaster and national figure, Dr. Peter Igho, MFR.

The conferment took place during the golden jubilee and reunion of the pioneer staff of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Sokoto, where Dr. Igho began his illustrious broadcasting career nearly five decades ago.

Speaking at the occasion, the Sultan described the honouree as a man of integrity, creative excellence, and unwavering commitment to national development. The title, Kakakin Daular Usmaniya—which translates to “Spokesperson of the Usmaniya Caliphate”—is traditionally reserved for individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the nation and upheld the values of unity, honour, and cultural advancement.

Dr. Igho’s recognition comes as no surprise to many, given his significant contributions to the growth of the television and broadcast industry in Nigeria. A pioneer of creative programming and public education through media, he is credited with producing some of the most iconic Nigerian television shows of all time.

A Creative Legacy with Northern Roots

Born in Jos and educated in Kaduna and later at the University of Ibadan, Dr. Igho’s early professional life was shaped in Northern Nigeria. In 1975, he became a founding staff member at Nigerian Television Sokoto. When the station was merged into the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in 1977, his career took a national turn.

From Sokoto, he moved to Lagos, where he became a household name through a string of critically acclaimed and culturally resonant programmes, including Cock Crow at Dawn, Mirror in the Sun, New Masquerade, Things Fall Apart, The Village Headmaster, Behind the Clouds, Samanja, and Magana Jari Ce, among others.

These productions, many of which were firsts in their genres, not only entertained but educated Nigerians and fostered national unity during a formative period in the country’s history.

A Lifetime of National Service

Now in his late 70s, Dr. Igho remains active in national discourse, lending his voice to socio-political development and community building. He is also engaged in mentoring and public enlightenment, continuing his lifelong mission to inform, inspire, and uplift Nigerian society.

The Sultan’s conferment of this revered title is being viewed as both a recognition of past achievements and an endorsement of Dr. Igho’s continuing role in shaping Nigeria’s cultural and civic landscape.

Observers have noted the deep personal connection between the Sultan and Dr. Igho, dating back to their early professional days in Lagos. This familiarity, combined with a lifetime of distinguished service, undoubtedly influenced the Sultan’s decision.

Commenting on the honour, Lagos-based public relations consultant and social commentator Lumi Igun praised the Sultan’s decision, describing it as “a well-deserved recognition of a man whose life has been marked by integrity, consistency, and excellence.”

“Be consistent in your ways with due diligence, integrity, honesty, hard work and giving the best of you at all times with great love for your neighbour and humanity, and the stars will locate you wherever you are,” Igun said.
