Police Crack Down on Cult Gang and Serial Rapist as Sokoto Residents Urged to Stay Alert

okoto State Police Command

The Sokoto State Police Command has recorded major breakthroughs in its fight against crime, following the arrest of key suspects linked to cult activities, abduction, and sexual violence in the state. The Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Musa, shared the updates during a press briefing at the Command Headquarters in Sokoto, assuring residents that the police remain committed to protecting lives and property.

One of the major highlights of the briefing was the arrest of the leader of the notorious “Sai Malam” cult group. The group has caused fear in several communities due to its violent and ritual-related activities. CP Musa recalled that the police earlier arrested three members of the group in November 2025. After that operation, officers from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit launched a sustained manhunt for the remaining members.

That effort led to the arrest of the group’s leader and chief priest, Muhammed Muktar, popularly known as Sai Malam. Police operatives tracked him to his residence, which also served as his shrine. During a search, officers recovered a live python allegedly used for rituals, banners bearing the group’s name, and several charms and fetish items. The police described the arrest as a major step toward dismantling the cult and restoring peace in affected communities. Investigations are still ongoing.

In another disturbing case, the police arrested a suspected serial rapist, Anas Sani, at Gidan Igwai area of Sokoto. His arrest followed a complaint involving the abduction and rape of two teenage girls aged 17 and 18. During questioning, the suspect reportedly confessed and named three accomplices, one of whom remains at large.

Police revealed that the suspects allegedly posed as members of a peace organisation to lure young girls to their office. The victims were threatened, sexually abused, and secretly recorded. The videos were then used to blackmail them into continued abuse. So far, police have identified 28 victims and recovered a camouflage uniform and identity card used to intimidate them.

As the festive season approaches, CP Musa also warned residents to remain vigilant. He advised people to secure their homes, verify identities of anyone claiming to be officials, supervise young persons, and report suspicious activities promptly.

The police command reassured the public of its resolve to keep Sokoto safe and urged residents to support security efforts by sharing useful information. According to CP Musa, collective vigilance remains key to defeating crime in the state.
