A group of members of the House of Representatives has expressed concern over the state of Nigeria’s democracy, warning that recent political developments suggest a gradual decline in democratic values and institutions.
The lawmakers argued that democracy can only thrive where the rule of law, accountability, transparency and respect for constitutional principles are upheld. They stressed that public confidence in democratic governance depends on credible elections, independent institutions and the protection of citizens’ rights.
According to the group, Nigeria’s democratic system faces increasing challenges, including political tension, insecurity, economic hardship and declining public trust in government institutions. They called for urgent reforms aimed at strengthening democratic governance and improving institutional accountability.
The lawmakers urged political leaders across party lines to place national interest above partisan considerations. They emphasized that cooperation among government institutions is necessary to preserve democratic stability and promote sustainable national development.
The group also appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, the judiciary and other stakeholders to continue performing their constitutional responsibilities impartially. They argued that strong institutions are essential for protecting democracy and ensuring peaceful political competition.
Civil society organisations have similarly called for greater civic participation, transparency and respect for human rights as key pillars of democratic governance. Analysts noted that democratic systems remain strongest when citizens actively participate in governance and public institutions operate independently.

The lawmakers further encouraged Nigerians to remain committed to peaceful engagement in the democratic process, including voting, civic education and constructive dialogue. They stressed that lasting democratic progress requires the collective efforts of government, political parties, civil society and ordinary citizens.
Despite their concerns, the group expressed optimism that Nigeria’s democracy can be strengthened through constitutional reforms, institutional independence and responsible leadership. They urged all stakeholders to work together to safeguard democratic values, promote national unity and build public confidence in the country’s democratic institutions for future generations.
