National Debate Intensifies as Presidency Says Terrorism Originated Under Obasanjo

Olusegun Obasanjo

A sharp response has been issued to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo by the presidency, following his call for foreign intervention to address Nigeria’s growing insecurity under current leadership. The reply declared that terrorism had already taken root during Obasanjo’s own time in office — a period when extremist groups were allowed to form and expand their networks.

It was asserted that the ideological foundations and early cells of Boko Haram were incubated under Obasanjo; while recruitment, indoctrination and camp formations were underway, decisive action was not taken. As a result, what began as a small extremist movement was allowed to grow into a violent insurgency, regional menace, and part of a broader global jihadist network.

In reaction to Obasanjo’s recommendation for foreign assistance in securing Nigeria, the presidency argued that outsourcing internal security would amount to a surrender of sovereignty — not true statesmanship. The suggestion was described as hypocritical, especially coming from an individual under whose watch the first seeds of terrorism were allowed to germinate. https://caliphatebroadcast.com/five-policemen-killed-in-bauchi-ambush-buried/

It was emphasised that the current administration under Bola Tinubu is confronting a complex “full-spectrum terrorism” challenge — including international, regional, cross-border and locally-embedded extremist cells — through a comprehensive strategy combining military operations, intelligence-led actions, community protection, and counter-radicalisation efforts.

Criticisms of the government’s efforts were characterized as “selective amnesia wrapped in elder-statesmanship.” Those who contributed to early security failures were warned against rewriting history — and Nigerians were urged to support ongoing efforts rather than undermine them.
