INEC Extends Deadline for Party Membership Register Submission

INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit their membership registers ahead of the 2027 general elections, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) has re-elected Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda as its National Chairman.
INEC announced that political parties now have until May 10 to submit their membership registers, replacing the earlier deadline of April 21. The extension was disclosed by Mohammed Haruna, who explained that the decision followed consultations with political parties that raised concerns over the initial timeline.
According to him, the adjustment aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act, which require parties to submit their registers at least 21 days before their primaries. Political parties are also allowed to fix their primary election dates within the approved window of April 23 to May 30, provided they comply with the revised deadline.

Haruna emphasized that strict adherence to the timeline is crucial to ensuring a smooth and credible electoral process.
Meanwhile, at its 8th National Convention held in Abuja, the APC re-elected Nentawe Yilwatda as National Chairman through a consensus and voice vote process. Other members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) were also returned.
In his acceptance speech, Yilwatda pledged to lead a transparent, inclusive, and united party. He stated that the new leadership would focus on strengthening internal democracy, expanding the party’s reach, and empowering young people as key drivers of its future.
He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to the “Renewed Hope” agenda of Bola Tinubu, noting that ongoing economic and infrastructural reforms are beginning to yield positive results.
Yilwatda also promised an open-door leadership style and expressed confidence that the APC would emerge victorious in the 2027 general elections.
The developments signal both administrative adjustments by INEC and renewed political momentum within the APC as preparations intensify for the upcoming polls.
