Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has dismissed all commissioners and other political appointees in his administration, with immediate effect.
The decision announced late Wednesday through his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, followed a recent Supreme Court judgment that affected the validity of their appointments.
Earlier in the day, the governor held a valedictory session with members of the State Executive Council, where he thanked them for their service and contributions over the last two years.
“The Governor has relieved all commissioners and other public officers affected by the recent Supreme Court judgment of their appointments with immediate effect,” the statement said.
Fubara assured that the development would not slow down governance, promising renewed focus on delivering good governance and also wishing Nigerians a happy Independence anniversary.
The shake-up comes after a period of uncertainty in the state. During the interim administration of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), who was appointed to oversee the state under emergency rule, commissioners, special advisers, assistants, as well as boards and parastatal leadership, were suspended.
Since the end of that emergency rule on September 18, the fate of Fubara’s team had remained unclear. The State House of Assembly, in its first sitting afterward, called on the governor to submit a fresh list of commissioner nominees alongside the 2025 budget for screening and approval.
With Wednesday’s mass sackings now official, Rivers State enters a new phase of political restructuring, as the governor prepares to appoint a fresh cabinet.
