Fire Guts 55 Shops at Zamfara Central Market, Weeks After Previous Inferno

Tragedy struck again in Zamfara as another fire outbreak ravaged the central market in the early hours of Tuesday, destroying at least 55 shops in the herbal medicine section.

This latest incident comes just six weeks after a similar fire consumed over 100 shops at the same market, raising serious concerns among traders and residents.

According to the traders’ chairman, Alhaji Sa’adu Dahiru, the fire began around 1 a.m., and its cause remains unknown at the time of this report.

“This is devastating,” Dahiru said. “Some of our members have lost everything. One trader even kept N50,000 in his shop, hoping to deposit it in the bank today — now it’s gone with the rest of his goods.”

He called on the Zamfara State Government to step in and offer financial support to affected traders who have lost their only means of livelihood.

Muhammad Kabiru, another victim of the fire, estimated his losses at around N14 million.

“It’s a trial from Allah,” he said, remaining hopeful. “We’re not asking for compensation — just enough support to start over.”

The Managing Director of the market, Alhaji Ahmad Salihu Shinkafi, confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the blaze. Preliminary reports suggest it may have been triggered by a type of herb that reacts explosively to excessive heat.

To prevent future incidents, the market management has banned the use of fire within the premises — prohibiting tea vendors, food sellers, and others who operate with open flames.

“As of now, only God truly knows what sparked this fire,” Shinkafi added.

The incident marks yet another blow to traders in Zamfara, many of whom are still reeling from the previous fire. For now, the call for support rings louder than ever.
