The Federal Government has taken steps to strengthen Nigeria’s family planning programme by initiating plans for the local production of family planning commodities and inaugurating a committee to drive the process.
The initiative is aimed at reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported contraceptive products while improving the availability, affordability and sustainability of family planning services across the country.
The government said the move is part of broader efforts to strengthen the nation’s healthcare system and address challenges associated with the supply of essential reproductive health commodities. Officials noted that reliance on external sources has sometimes exposed the programme to funding uncertainties, supply disruptions and delays in the procurement and distribution of commodities.
With local manufacturing, the government expects Nigeria to develop greater control over the production and supply chain of family planning products. The initiative could also create opportunities for investment, technology transfer, skills development and employment within the pharmaceutical and healthcare manufacturing industries.
The newly inaugurated committee is expected to develop strategies and recommendations for achieving sustainable domestic production. Its responsibilities are likely to include identifying suitable manufacturers, assessing regulatory requirements, examining investment opportunities and developing a framework for quality assurance.
Health stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing local production as an important step towards strengthening reproductive healthcare and reducing vulnerabilities in the supply chain. They, however, stressed that locally produced commodities must meet international quality and safety standards.

Experts also emphasised the need for adequate funding, reliable electricity, access to raw materials, modern manufacturing facilities and efficient regulatory processes to make domestic production commercially viable.
Family planning remains an important component of public health, particularly in reducing unintended pregnancies, improving maternal and child health and allowing individuals and couples to make informed decisions about the timing and spacing of children.
The Federal Government said the initiative would require collaboration among government institutions, manufacturers, development partners, healthcare professionals and other stakeholders.
As the committee begins its work, attention is expected to focus on developing a practical roadmap that will move Nigeria from dependence on imported commodities towards a stronger and more self-sufficient reproductive health supply chain.
