The Federal Government has officially declared public holidays to mark the Christmas and New Year celebrations, giving Nigerians time to celebrate, reflect, and spend quality moments with family and loved ones. The announcement forms part of the government’s annual tradition of recognising major national and religious festivities.
The minister also called on citizens to reflect on the year coming to an end and to renew their commitment to building a stronger and more united Nigeria in the year ahead. He encouraged Nigerians to show kindness to one another, especially to the less privileged, during the festive season.
The Minister of Interior, who made the announcement on behalf of the Federal Government, urged Nigerians to use the festive period to promote peace, unity, and mutual respect across religious and ethnic lines. He described Christmas as a season that reminds people of love, sacrifice, and goodwill, values that remain important for national cohesion.
According to the declaration, Wednesday, December 25, 2025, has been set aside to celebrate Christmas Day, while Thursday, December 26, 2025, will be observed as Boxing Day. In addition, Wednesday, January 1, 2026, has been declared a public holiday to mark the New Year.
While wishing Christians a joyful Christmas celebration, the Federal Government extended goodwill messages to all Nigerians, regardless of faith. Officials stressed that the holidays provide an opportunity for rest and reflection after a demanding year filled with economic and social challenges.
The government also advised citizens to celebrate responsibly. Nigerians were urged to remain security conscious, avoid unnecessary travel risks, and comply with safety guidelines throughout the festive period. Security agencies have been placed on alert across the country to ensure the safety of lives and property during the holidays.
Motorists were reminded to obey traffic rules, while travellers were advised to plan their journeys carefully and avoid late-night movements on lonely routes. Parents and guardians were also encouraged to monitor children and young people to ensure their safety during celebrations.
The declaration of the holidays has been welcomed by many Nigerians, who see the break as a chance to relax, reconnect with family members, and prepare for the new year. Businesses, schools, and government offices are expected to close in line with the holiday schedule and resume normal activities after the celebrations.
As the year draws to a close, the Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to national peace, stability, and progress. Citizens were encouraged to enter the new year with hope, discipline, and a renewed sense of responsibility toward the nation.
