A former operative of the Department of State Services (DSS), identified as Ezeakolam, has been arraigned before a Federal High Court over allegations of being a member of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and engaging in activities linked to the group.
The defendant was brought before the court by the Federal Government on charges bordering on alleged membership of the separatist organisation, which has been designated as a terrorist group by Nigerian authorities. Prosecutors alleged that the former security officer maintained ties with the organisation despite previously serving in the nation’s intelligence service.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution informed the court that investigations uncovered evidence allegedly connecting the defendant to IPOB-related activities. The government argued that the charges were based on intelligence reports and findings gathered during the course of its investigation.
Ezeakolam pleaded not guilty to the allegations when the charges were read in court. His defence counsel urged the court to grant him bail, maintaining that the defendant is innocent and entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
Counsel further argued that the former DSS officer had served the country faithfully and would not interfere with investigations or evade trial if granted bail. The prosecution, however, asked the court to consider the seriousness of the allegations before making any decision on the bail application.

After listening to submissions from both parties, the trial judge adjourned the matter to a later date for the hearing of the bail application and further proceedings. The court also made orders regarding the defendant’s custody pending the determination of the bail request.
The case has attracted public attention because it involves a former member of one of Nigeria’s foremost intelligence agencies. Legal experts say the proceedings underscore the importance of allowing the judicial process to determine criminal allegations through evidence presented before the court rather than through public opinion.
The Federal Government has continued to prosecute individuals accused of involvement in terrorism-related offences, insisting that such cases will be handled strictly in accordance with the law. At the same time, legal analysts have emphasized that every defendant is entitled to a fair hearing and the full protection of constitutional rights throughout the trial.
As the case progresses, the court is expected to examine the evidence presented by the prosecution and the defence before reaching any conclusion. Until then, the allegations remain before the court, and Ezeakolam is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty through the judicial process.
