Arsenal have completed the signing of Brazil international midfielder Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United in a major move designed to strengthen their midfield options.
The 29-year-old has joined the Premier League champions for a reported £75 million and has signed a four-year contract with an option for an additional year. His arrival represents one of Arsenal’s major moves in the current transfer window.
Guimarães arrives at Arsenal after an influential spell at Newcastle, where he became one of the club’s most important players and eventually captained the side. During his time at St James’ Park, he helped Newcastle win the Carabao Cup and qualify for the Champions League.
The Brazilian midfielder previously played for Athletico Paranaense in his home country before moving to French club Lyon. Newcastle signed him in January 2022, and he quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s outstanding midfielders.

His versatility is expected to be particularly valuable to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. Guimarães can operate as a defensive midfielder or play in a more advanced role, giving the manager additional tactical options alongside players such as Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard.
Arsenal had been linked with the player for several weeks before the transfer was completed. Earlier reports indicated that Guimarães wanted a new challenge and was attracted by the opportunity to compete for major trophies with Arsenal.
The midfielder said leaving Newcastle was a difficult decision, expressing appreciation for the club’s supporters, teammates and staff. He nevertheless indicated that he was ready for a new stage of his career.
For Arsenal, the transfer is seen as an investment in both experience and quality as the club seeks to maintain its position among England’s leading teams and compete strongly in domestic and European competitions.
Newcastle, meanwhile, face the challenge of replacing a player who had become central to their midfield. Reports indicate the club has already begun considering potential replacements following Guimarães’ departure.
The move is expected to generate considerable attention as Arsenal prepare for the new season, with supporters hoping the Brazilian’s experience and technical ability can help the club compete for more major honours.
