The Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare has confirmed the arrest of a woman and her alleged accomplice over the reported sale of a baby for ₦2.9 million, describing the incident as a serious violation of child protection laws.
According to the ministry, the suspects were apprehended following intelligence received by authorities regarding the alleged illegal transaction. Preliminary investigations indicate that the child was reportedly sold under circumstances that are now being examined by law enforcement agencies.
Officials said the rescued baby has been placed under protective care while investigations continue. The welfare of the child remains the government’s top priority, with medical and social support being provided pending the outcome of the case.
Authorities stated that the suspects will face prosecution if investigations confirm the allegations. They emphasized that child trafficking, illegal adoption and the sale of children are criminal offences under Nigerian law and carry severe penalties.
The ministry called on residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities involving children to relevant authorities. It noted that community members play an important role in protecting vulnerable children from abuse, exploitation and trafficking.
Child rights advocates have condemned the alleged incident, stressing that economic hardship should never justify the sale or exploitation of children.
