Police Neutralise Two Bandits, Recover AK-47 Rifles in Sokoto

The Sokoto State Police Command says it has neutralised two suspected bandits, recovered two AK-47 rifles and 54 rounds of live ammunition, and arrested several suspects in separate operations against banditry and motorcycle theft across the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Hassan Hayatu Shaffa.

According to the statement, the breakthrough followed a distress call on August 15, 2026, that armed bandits were advancing from Tsauana Forest to attack Dankadu Village in Illela Local Government Area.

It said operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Volunteer Constabulary and Rescue Unit (VCRU), and other tactical teams engaged the bandits in a gun battle, forcing them to retreat into the forest.

Two of the fleeing bandits were subsequently neutralised during a search of the area, while two AK-47 rifles, two magazines and 54 rounds of ammunition were recovered.

The Command said no casualty was recorded among security personnel or residents, adding that patrols had been intensified in the area.

In another operation in Kwannawa and Tamaje areas of Sokoto metropolis, police arrested three suspects allegedly involved in motorcycle theft. Five stolen motorcycles and a fabricated pistol were recovered.

The Command also arrested suspects linked to another motorcycle theft syndicate operating around Mana Babba, Mabera, Anguwar Rogo and Tamaje. Nine stolen motorcycles were recovered, while several suspects were arrested and others declared wanted.

The Commissioner of Police commended the tactical teams for their bravery and professionalism and warned criminals that the Command would continue to pursue them.

He also urged residents to promptly report suspicious activities and warned members of the public against buying stolen motorcycles, stressing that buyers could also face prosecution.
