The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has described the defection of former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, as a major turning point in Nigeria’s political landscape.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said Kwankwaso’s move represents a growing coalition aimed at delivering change and credible leadership in future elections.
Abdullahi described Kwankwaso as a “game-changer,” noting that his entry into the party had already triggered a surge in new registrations on the ADC’s online platform within 24 hours. According to him, this development reflects increasing public support for an alternative political direction in the country.
He stated that Kwankwaso’s decision aligns with the sentiments of many Nigerians who are seeking leadership that understands and addresses everyday challenges. Abdullahi added that the former governor’s political experience, grassroots influence, and unifying capacity make him a valuable asset in the party’s mission to rebuild Nigeria.
“As part of this development, he has encouraged his supporters nationwide to join the ADC, further strengthening this growing coalition for change,” Abdullahi said.
Party Leaders, Key Figures Witness Defection

The statement revealed that the defection was witnessed by prominent leaders within the party, including the National Chairman, David Mark, and the National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, alongside members of the National Working Committee (NWC).
Also present at the event were notable political figures and presidential aspirants, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi. Their presence, Abdullahi noted, demonstrated unity and growing momentum within the party.
He emphasised that the increasing number of new members joining the ADC indicates a shift in public alignment toward a platform focused on inclusive governance and national development.
According to Abdullahi, the ADC is positioning itself not just as a political party but as a collective movement committed to restoring trust, creating opportunities, and ensuring that Nigerians can live with dignity under a responsive system of governance.
