Bafarawa Political Family Shifts Camp, Says Move Is About Sokoto’s Future

A major political movement linked to former Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, has announced its decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and support the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State. Members of the bloc say the move is driven by a desire to remain relevant and play a stronger role in shaping the state’s future.

The decision followed a wide-ranging meeting that brought together leaders and representatives of the Bafarawa political family from all 23 local government areas of the state. During the gathering, members reviewed the current political climate and discussed where their collective strength would best serve the people of Sokoto. At the end of the meeting, they agreed unanimously to align with the APC.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Chairman of the Bafarawa Akida Movement, Professor Hamza Maishanu, said the decision reflected the voice of the grassroots. He explained that consultations took place at ward, local government, and state levels before the final resolution. According to him, the movement’s long-standing structure made it easy for members to speak openly and reach a shared position.

Professor Maishanu described Bafarawa Akida as more than a political label. He said it represents values such as justice, accountability, integrity, and leadership that puts people first. He noted that these principles guided the group’s decision to support the APC, which they believe currently offers a clearer path for development and inclusive governance in Sokoto State.

The bloc also expressed strong confidence in Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s leadership. Members praised the governor for his calm approach, respect for elders, and focus on projects that improve daily life for citizens. They said his recognition of former Governor Bafarawa as an elder statesman showed maturity and respect for Sokoto’s political history.

For many members, the decision was personal as well as political. Some said they want to see a stable government that listens to the people and delivers visible results. Others stressed the need to unite behind a platform they believe can bring peace, growth, and opportunity to local communities.

The movement pledged to mobilise its supporters across Sokoto State in support of the APC as political activities gradually build toward the 2027 general elections. They also promised to contribute beyond elections by promoting peace, unity, and grassroots development.

The group clarified that former Governor Attahiru Bafarawa remains retired from active partisan politics. They stressed that the decision reflects the collective will of the movement’s members, not a personal declaration by the former governor.

Members of the bloc ended the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to work with the APC-led administration to help move Sokoto State forward through cooperation, good governance, and shared responsibility.
