Former Presidential Aide, Doyin Okupe, Passes Away at 72

Doyin Okupe, a former media aide to ex-Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, has passed away at the age of 72. He died on Friday, March 7, at a hospital in Victoria Island, Lagos. According to family sources, Dr. Okupe had been critically ill in recent weeks and succumbed to complications from cancer.

Early Life and Education

Born on March 22, 1952, in Iperu, Ogun State, Doyin Okupe was the son of Chief Matthew Adekoya Okupe, a banker with Agbonmagbe Bank. He received his early education at St. Jude’s School in Ebute Metta, Lagos, and later attended Igbobi College in Yaba, Lagos. He furthered his studies at the prestigious University of Ibadan in Oyo State.

Political and Professional Career

Dr. Okupe played a significant role in Nigeria’s political landscape. During the early years of the Fourth Republic, he was appointed Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo. In 2002, he contested in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial primaries in Ogun State, where he was a major contender against Gbenga Daniel.

In 2012, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him as the Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs. His influence in Nigerian politics continued when he later served as the spokesperson for Peter Obi’s presidential campaign.

Legacy and Passing

Dr. Doyin Okupe leaves behind a lasting legacy in political communication and governance in Nigeria. He is survived by his wife and children.
