Tension in Rivers as Security Tightens Ahead of Assembly Resumption

The political landscape in Rivers State remains charged as security forces flood the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex in Port Harcourt, following the Supreme Court’s ruling reinstating Speaker Martin Amaewhule and other lawmakers.

On Monday morning, heavily armed police squads and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) took strategic positions around the Assembly complex as legislators prepared to reconvene under Amaewhule’s leadership.

Supreme Court Orders Unhindered Resumption

The Supreme Court’s ruling on Friday reaffirmed the legitimacy of the Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers State Assembly, directing that all duly elected members be allowed to resume legislative duties without obstruction. In compliance with the court order, Amaewhule issued a notice of sitting on Monday morning.

What’s on the Agenda?

While details of Monday’s plenary remain unclear, speculations suggest that local government administration could be at the heart of discussions. Given the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, the sitting could set the stage for high-stakes legislative decisions that may further shape the state’s governance structure.

With security forces on high alert, all eyes are on the Assembly as the political drama in Rivers State unfolds.
