2027 Elections: FCT Police Commissioner Warns Against Violence, Electoral Offences

The Commissioner of Police in charge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ahmed Sanusi, has cautioned residents to steer clear of violence and electoral offences ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sanusi gave the warning in Abuja during an engagement with members of the Lugbe community, as part of activities marking the 2026 National Police Day. He emphasised the need for peaceful political participation and urged residents, particularly youths, not to allow themselves to be used as tools for violence.
According to him, political ambition should never come at the cost of human lives or the destruction of property. He warned that individuals who allow themselves to be influenced or induced into unlawful acts risk endangering their lives and disrupting public order.
The police commissioner stressed that while citizens have the constitutional right to belong to any political party of their choice, such rights must be exercised responsibly and without resorting to violence.

He specifically advised youths to reject any form of inducement from politicians aimed at inciting unrest during elections. Acts such as ballot box snatching, attacking supporters of opposing parties, destruction of electoral materials, and obstruction of electoral officials were described as serious offences that would not be tolerated.
Sanusi also urged parents and community leaders to caution their children and wards against participating in political violence. He noted that some political actors may attempt to exploit young people for disruptive activities, adding that such actions could have severe legal consequences.
Furthermore, he assured residents that the police command would collaborate closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), community stakeholders, and other relevant bodies to ensure that elections in the FCT are conducted in a peaceful and credible manner.
The CP reiterated the commitment of the command to sustain community engagement initiatives in the lead-up to the elections. He said such efforts are aimed at building public trust in the police and reducing the likelihood of electoral violence.
He concluded by calling on all residents to uphold the rule of law and contribute to a safe and orderly electoral process in 2027.
